Our Story

We come from a long history of hospitality. Starting with the Capp Motel two generations ago, we’ve welcomed guests to Spearfish since 1963. If you would’ve asked us as twenty-somethings if we would carry on the tradition, we would have said that we were done with doing laundry!

Cappie left for the US Air Force right out of high school and traveled the world as a C-130 loadmaster. After he got out, he spent some time living the #vanlife in his VW Westie. You’ll have to ask him how he met Rhianna in her early years and how he came to live on an airfield where he got to jump out of perfectly good airplanes. Eventually, he had the chance to buy Granny Flats – his grandpa’s farm where his mom grew up. He moved back to Spearfish and has become a premier off-grid builder in the region. Check out his Discovery Channel Building Off the Grid specials (link below).

Rachel grew up on a farm in “east river” South Dakota, firmly establishing a love of the open skies over the High Plains. Her schooling and aerospace science career have taken her all over the world. Now, she’s the CEO of a consultancy that specializes in project and change management. She loves art in all its forms – choral singing, fine arts, dance, and design.

Alex is a gorgeous young woman, inside and out. She is warm, kind, funny, and smart. She’s a ballet dancer and has traveled to 14 countries so far. We’re proud of her. She took on the design and build of The Studio, inspired by her love of art.

Of all the things we do, we enjoy welcoming guests the most. We hope you can begin to experience what the Black Hills has to offer. It’s a special place, and we know you’ll be as enchanted as we are.

Values

Rachel has plenty of corporate experience developing values and missions and all of that stuff. Cappie thrives in less structured environments (this is a *major* understatement!). So, we’ve settled on what inspires us.

We are inspired by beauty.
We are inspired by diversity.
We are inspired by sustainability.

Whether it’s a sunrise, a delightful meal, or a broad smile, beauty is all around. We hope you’ll see one of our young buck whitetail deer, or hear amazing local acoustic music, or discover your favorite local brew.

We welcome people from around the world, urban and rural, from every religion, straight and LGBTQ+, creatives to engineers. Every person we meet has something to teach us.

We have lived off grid, so we are hyper aware of our impact every day. We use hand towels instead of paper towels, we create solar power, we compost organic waste. Generally, we get super nerdy about local food, homesteading, and minimizing our footprint.

We are curious. We love exploring, learning, and laughing.
